5 Signs Your Shower Cartridge Needs Replacing (And Which Part to Buy)

Shower cartridges don't fail suddenly - they degrade slowly over months or years. By the time you notice the symptoms, the cartridge has been on its way out for a while. Here's how to diagnose it and what to do about it.

Sign #1

Temperature Swings Randomly

You're mid-shower and the water goes from comfortable to scalding or freezing without touching the handle. This is the most common sign of a failing pressure-balance cartridge. The internal spool that balances hot and cold water pressure is worn or stuck. This is especially common in Kohler Rite-Temp and Moen Posi-Temp valves after 8-10 years. Fix: Kohler K-304 replacement ($33.98) or Moen 1222 replacement ($32.98).

Sign #2

Handle is Stiff or Hard to Turn

Mineral deposits from hard water build up inside the cartridge, creating friction against the valve body walls. You'll notice it getting progressively harder to adjust temperature. This is particularly common in areas with hard water. Some people mistake this for a handle problem, but replacing the handle won't help - the cartridge is the friction source.

Sign #3

Constant Drip When the Shower is Off

Even with the handle fully in the off position, water continues to seep through. The internal seals and O-rings inside the cartridge have hardened or cracked, allowing water to bypass the shutoff mechanism. A slow drip can waste over 3,000 gallons per year - that's roughly $30-50 added to your annual water bill for absolutely nothing.

Sign #4

Weak Water Pressure from the Shower Only

If other fixtures have normal pressure but your shower is weak, debris may be clogging the cartridge's internal ports. Over time, sediment from municipal water or well water accumulates inside the cartridge body and restricts flow. This is different from a clogged shower head - if cleaning the head doesn't help, the cartridge is likely the culprit.

Sign #5

Handle Spins Without Engaging

The broach - the connection between the handle and the cartridge stem - has stripped. The handle turns but nothing happens inside the valve. This one requires immediate cartridge replacement because you may not be able to shut the water off properly. If this happens, use the shutoff valve to control water until you can replace the cartridge.

Which Cartridge Do You Need?

Look at the brand of your shower valve trim (the plate on the wall). Then match it to the right replacement:

Valve BrandPart NumberFourHome ReplacementPrice
Kohler / SterlingK-304Shop →$33.98
Moen Posi-Temp1222Shop →$32.98
Moen single-handle1200 / 1225Shop →$23.98
Gerber97-022 / 97-014Shop →$44.98
Grohe Tempress II47080Shop →$34.98
Kohler Rite-TempGP500520Shop →$17.98

If you can't identify the brand, look for markings on the cartridge itself after removing it. Most cartridges have the manufacturer's part number stamped or molded into the body.

When to Call a Plumber Instead

Most cartridge replacements are straightforward DIY jobs. But call a plumber if: the shutoff valve won't close fully and you can't isolate the water, the cartridge stem breaks off inside the valve body, you see corrosion or damage to the valve body itself (not just the cartridge), or the valve body is a brand you can't identify and can't find a matching cartridge for.
