Back one stem out and measure it. The right part is solid brass, 5-3/16 in. end to end, with twelve splines on the broach that carries the handle. A compression stem rises and falls through several turns. If yours turns only a quarter turn in place, or is plastic, you have a cartridge valve instead.
The tub spout drips with the handles closed, the showerhead trickles after shutoff, or the handle will not stop the water no matter how hard you turn it. Worn stem threads and a tired washer face cause it.
