Moen 1222 vs 1225 vs 1200 vs 1224: Which Moen Cartridge Do You Have?

Updated October 2026 · 7 min read · By the FourHome team
Moen 1200, 1222, 1225 and 1224 style replacement cartridges side by side

Moen made four cartridges that people constantly mix up: the 1222, 1225, 1200 and 1224. They look similar in a photo, but they are not interchangeable, and the wrong one will not go in or will not work right. The good news is you can usually tell which one you have from the handle before you take anything apart.

The Moentrol exception

Moentrol showers have a push/pull handle and are pressure balanced, so people often assume they take a 1222. They do not. Moen says the Moentrol valve uses a 1225 flow cartridge, and the pressure balancing is done by a separate 1423 spool. Moen's tip for spotting a Moentrol: the push/pull handle and escutcheon screws at about the 2 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions.

1200 vs 1225

The 1200 is the older brass cartridge. The 1225 arrived in 1981 and is the one most single-handle Moen faucets use today. Both are held by the same style of horseshoe retainer clip, and aftermarket brass cartridges such as the FourHome replacement for Moen 1225 and 1200 are built to fit valve bodies that take either one. Neither fits a Posi-Temp valve.

What the "B" means

You will see 1222B, 1225B, 1200B and 1224B. The B marks bulk packaging, not a different part. Moen's own store labels the 1222B and 1224B as bulk, and SupplyHouse describes the 1225 and 1225B as identical except for packaging.

Should you call Moen first?

Moen's warranty covers replacement parts free of charge for the original homeowner, with proof of purchase. If that is you and you can wait for shipping, it is worth the call. If you bought the house, lost the receipt, or need the shower working tonight, a replacement cartridge is the faster route.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Moen 1225 the same as the 1225B?

Yes. The B versions are the same cartridge packaged for bulk. Moen's own store labels the 1222B and 1224B as bulk, and SupplyHouse describes the 1225 and 1225B as identical.

Can I put a 1225 in a Posi-Temp shower?

No. Posi-Temp valves use the 1222 pressure-balancing cartridge.

Does a Moentrol shower use the 1222?

No. Moen says the Moentrol valve uses a 1225 flow cartridge, with pressure balancing handled by a separate 1423 spool.

Will Moen replace my cartridge for free?

Moen's warranty covers parts for the original homeowner, free of charge, with proof of purchase. If you are not the original owner or need the part today, a replacement cartridge is the faster fix.
