Will it fit?

Fits

  • The plastic Moen 1225 and 1225B push-pull cartridge
  • Moen single-handle kitchen, lavatory, tub and shower faucets built on that cartridge

Not compatible with

  • The brass 1200 cartridge
  • The 1222 and 1222B pressure balance shower cartridge
  • The two-handle 1224 and 1234 cartridges
  • Ceramic disc cartridges
  • A cracked shell or scored stem (replace the cartridge)

Is this your part?

Pull the handle and the U-shaped brass retainer clip, then twist the cartridge out. It is the 1225 pattern if it has a plastic shell with two side ports capped by rubber grommets and a stem that pushes and pulls through the shell. Match the grommets and O-rings on it against the pieces in the kit.

When to replace it

The spout drips with the handle off, water weeps up around the handle, the handle has gone stiff or gritty, or water leaks under the sink where the cartridge meets the valve body. Flattened grommets and hardened O-rings cause it while the shell itself is still sound.

How to install it

Time: About 20 minutes. Tools: Screwdriver or hex key, Pliers, Silicone plumbing grease.

  1. Shut off the water and open the handle to bleed pressure.
  2. Pull the handle and the retainer clip, then twist the cartridge out with the twist cap and pull it by the stem.
  3. Push the stem out of the shell and roll off the old grommets and O-rings.
  4. Seat the small O-rings in the stem grooves, the large ones on the shell and the grommets in the two side ports. Grease lightly; too much grease can let the handle drop.
  5. Push the stem back in and reinstall the cartridge in the same orientation.
  6. Press the matching retainer clip fully home before the water goes back on. An unseated clip lets the cartridge push out under pressure.
  7. Restore water and test. If hot and cold are reversed, rotate the stem 180 degrees.

Questions

Why are there three different clips?

Moen valve bodies take different clip patterns. The kit carries three so the one that matches your valve is in the bag. Keep the other two as spares.

Is grease included?

No. Use a light coat of silicone plumbing grease.

Should I rebuild or replace the cartridge?

Rebuild when the shell and stem are sound and only the seals are worn. If the shell is cracked or the stem is scored, replace the cartridge. FourHome sells a replacement for the Moen 1225 push-pull cartridge kit.

Does it fit the 1222 shower cartridge?

No. The 1222 and 1222B pressure balance cartridge is a different part with different seals.
