Pop the handle index cap, back out the handle screw and lift the handle. The number is stamped on the cartridge body or its cap. This puller is cut for 1200 and 1225 cartridges. If it reads 1222, use the 1222 removal tool instead.
A cartridge that has calcified into the valve will not budge with pliers, and twisting it can snap the stem and leave the sleeve stuck. Pulling it straight and square is what protects the brass valve body.
