Will it fit?

Fits

  • American Standard Colony short pattern three-handle tub and shower faucets
  • Hot or cold position, left or right handle

Not compatible with

  • The 5-1/8 in. long pattern stem 72855-0700
  • Center diverter stems 50772-0700 and 72856-0700
  • Single-handle cartridge valves

Is this your part?

Pull the handle, sleeve and escutcheon and back the stem out. It measures about 4-13/16 in. end to end, has a 16-point splined broach at the handle end and a seat washer and screw on the threaded tip. It sits behind the left or right handle, with the diverter stem behind the center handle.

When to replace it

The tub spout keeps dripping with the handles shut, water weeps out past a handle, or a handle has gone stiff to turn. A worn stem or seat washer is the usual cause.

What is in the box

How to install it

Time: About 15 minutes. Tools: Tub and shower socket wrench, Screwdriver.

  1. Shut off the water and open the handles to bleed pressure.
  2. Pry off the index cap and remove the handle screw, handle, sleeve and escutcheon.
  3. Back the old stem out with a deep tub and shower socket.
  4. Look at the brass seat. A new stem on a pitted seat keeps dripping.
  5. Thread the new stem in by hand and snug it with the socket.
  6. Refit the trim and test the shutoff.

Questions

How many stems does a full rebuild take?

Two hot or cold stems plus the center diverter stem. FourHome sells the replacement for American Standard 50772-0700 short diverter stem separately.

How do I tell short pattern from long pattern?

Measure the old stem. Short pattern is 4-13/16 in. Long pattern (72855-0700) is 5-1/8 in.

Is the seat included?

No. Check the brass seat while the stem is out and replace it if it is pitted.
