Will it fit?

Fits

  • American Standard Colony long pattern three-handle tub and shower faucets
  • Hot or cold position, left or right handle

Not compatible with

  • The 4-13/16 in. short pattern stem 50729-0700
  • Center diverter stems 72856-0700 and 50772-0700
  • Single-handle pressure balance valves and cartridge faucets

Is this your part?

Pull the handle, sleeve and escutcheon. A brass stem threaded into the body with a 16-point splined broach on top and a rubber washer on the inner end, measuring 5-1/8 in. from the broach tip to the washer screw, is the long pattern stem. At 4-13/16 in. it is the short pattern stem instead.

When to replace it

The tub spout keeps dripping after the handle is off, water weeps around the handle sleeve, or a handle has gone stiff or loose on its broach. A worn stem and hardened washer cause it.

What is in the box

How to install it

Time: About 15 minutes. Tools: Deep tub and shower socket, Screwdriver.

  1. Shut off the water and open the handles to bleed pressure.
  2. Pry off the index cap and remove the handle screw, handle, sleeve and escutcheon.
  3. Back the old stem out with a deep tub and shower socket.
  4. Look at the brass seat. A new stem on a pitted seat keeps dripping.
  5. Thread the new stem in by hand and snug it with the socket.
  6. Refit the trim and test the shutoff.

Questions

Does one stem fit the hot and cold side?

Yes. The same stem works in either outside handle.

Is the seat included?

No. Each handle seals on a 1/2-20 brass seat, sold separately as a replacement for American Standard 57281-07. FourHome sells those seats in a 10-pack.

How do I tell long pattern from short pattern?

Measure the old stem. Long pattern is 5-1/8 in. Short pattern (50729-0700) is 4-13/16 in.
