Will it fit?

Fits

  • Center diverter on American Standard Colony short pattern three-handle tub and shower valves
  • Valves that use 50729-0700 short pattern hot and cold stems on each side

Not compatible with

  • Long pattern diverter 72856-0700 (5-13/16 in.)
  • Hot or cold stems 50729-0700 and 72855-0700
  • Transfer valve cartridge M950070-0070A
  • Washerless diverters

Is this your part?

Pull the center handle stem and look for a 16-point broach, a threaded brass bonnet, a black O-ring and a seat washer held by a brass screw, about 5-1/8 in. overall. Short pattern trim uses a short escutcheon sleeve.

When to replace it

Water keeps running from the tub spout with the shower on, the shower will not hold, shower flow is weak, or the center handle drips. A worn diverter stem or seat washer is the usual cause.

What is in the box

How to install it

Time: About 15 minutes. Tools: Tub bonnet socket, Screwdriver.

  1. Shut off the water and open the tub spout to drain the lines.
  2. Pry off the index cap and remove the handle screw, handle, sleeve and escutcheon.
  3. Turn the bonnet counterclockwise with the socket to back out the old stem.
  4. Inspect the brass seat and renew it if pitted. A new stem on a worn seat keeps sending water to the spout.
  5. Thread in the new stem and snug it with the socket.
  6. Refit the trim and check that the shower holds with no flow from the spout.

Questions

Why does water still come from the spout after I changed the stem?

The brass seat is usually worn. A new stem sealing on a pitted seat keeps sending water to the spout.

Does it fit long pattern Colony valves?

No. Long pattern valves take the 5-13/16 in. 72856-0700 diverter.

What about the hot and cold stems?

They are separate parts. FourHome sells the replacement for American Standard 50729-0700 short pattern stem.
