Will it fit?

Fits

  • Older Kohler Coralais K-15700 and K-15701 single-handle tub and shower valves
  • The K-15700-K, K-15700-KS, K-15701-K, K-15701-KS and K-P15701-K versions
  • Valves with a square brass stem and no adaptor on the stem

Not compatible with

  • Kohler K-304 and K-11748 platform valves (round splined stem, GP77759 cap)
  • Kohler K-15877 valves (black stem cap with a seal plate)
  • Kohler K-15153 and K-15155 cartridge valves
  • Valves with a plastic square stem (they take the Kohler GP71969 cap)
  • The pressure balancing unit under the cap (sold separately)

Is this your part?

Pull the handle and escutcheon. The older Kohler Coralais valve shows a black cap held to the brass body by two screws through a metal plate, with a square brass stem in the center and no adaptor on the end. Square stem plus brass color is the check Kohler's own valve identifier uses to land on this cap. A round, splined, black, silver or plastic stem belongs to a different Kohler valve.

When to replace it

The shower head or tub spout keeps dripping after the handle is shut, water weeps out the front of the cap where the stem passes through, the cap floods from a flattened O-ring when the handle opens, or the handle has gone stiff or wobbles. Temperature swings point to the pressure balancing unit under the cap instead.

What is in the box

How to install it

Time: 15 to 20 minutes. Tools: Phillips screwdriver.

  1. Shut off the water and pull the handle and escutcheon.
  2. Back out the two cap screws and lift off the plate and the old cap. Note which way the cap tab faces.
  3. Grease the new cap O-ring from the packet in the box.
  4. Set the new cap on in the same orientation and refit the plate.
  5. Tighten both screws evenly. If the new screws will not seat in an old brass body, reuse the original screws.
  6. Restore the water and test before the trim goes back on.

Questions

Is the pressure balancing unit included?

No. This is the cap only. On valves with a pressure balancing unit it is a separate part, and FourHome sells the replacement for Kohler GP500520 separately.

My valve has a round splined stem. Will this fit?

No. Round stems belong to the K-304 and K-11748 platform, which takes a different cap. See the replacement for Kohler GP876851 kit.

The new screws will not tighten in my old valve body. What now?

Reuse the original screws. The cap seals on its O-ring, not on screw torque.

My old cap has a plastic stem. Is this the right part?

No. A plastic square stem takes the replacement for Kohler GP71969 and Sterling 05200 cap kit.
