Will it fit?

Fits

  • Post-1968 Mixet single-handle tub and shower valves on the MS-5AT design
  • Mixet valves in mobile and manufactured homes, and site-built homes of the same era

Not compatible with

  • Pre-1968 Mixet valves, which take the much longer MS3T
  • Three-handle compression faucets
  • Pressure balance valves
  • Cartridges from other faucet brands

Is this your part?

Pull your old cartridge and measure it. This is the short post-1968 cartridge at 4-1/2 in. The pre-1968 Mixet valve takes a much longer stem sold as MS3T, and the two do not interchange. That one measurement prevents the most common wrong-part return on Mixet valves.

When to replace it

The shower drips after it is shut off, drifts hot and cold on its own, has gone stiff or gritty in the hand, or has lost pressure. A worn cartridge is the usual cause of all four on a single-handle Mixet valve.

What is in the box

How to install it

Time: About 15 minutes. Tools: Screwdriver, Adjustable wrench, Silicone plumber's grease.

  1. Shut the supply and open the valve to bleed pressure.
  2. Pull the handle and trim.
  3. Back off the assembly nut and draw the old cartridge and sleeve out together.
  4. Slide the new cartridge and sleeve in at the same clock position as the old one.
  5. Thread the nut down and reassemble the trim.
  6. Use silicone plumber's grease only. Petroleum grease swells rubber seals.

Questions

Why replace the sleeve too?

A scored old sleeve will leak past a brand new cartridge. The sleeve ships in the box for that reason.

Is this a pressure balance cartridge?

No. It fits Mixet non-pressure balance single-lever tub and shower valves. It will not add anti-scald protection to the valve.

How do I tell post-1968 from pre-1968?

Measure the old cartridge. The post-1968 cartridge is 4-1/2 in. The pre-1968 MS3T stem is much longer.

Is it the same repair as Danco MX-1?

Yes. The Danco version ships an assembly nut only. This one also includes the chrome sleeve.
