Will it fit?

Fits

  • Sayco 308 three-handle tub and shower valves
  • Sayco T-308 three-handle tub and shower valves
  • Hot position, the left handle as you face the faucet

Not compatible with

  • Cold or diverter positions (Sayco P004 and 06550 are separate parts)
  • Earlier Sayco valve families that predate the 308 design
  • Single-handle and pressure balance valves
  • Ceramic disc cartridges

Is this your part?

Back the hot stem out and measure it end to end: 4-1/2 in. from the broach tip to the end of the seat washer holder. Count 16 splines on the broach. The bonnet thread is right hand even though the hot handle sits on the left as you face the faucet, which is where most wrong-side orders come from.

When to replace it

The spout or showerhead drips with the hot handle closed, water seeps around the hot handle base, the handle needs extra force to shut off, or it has gone stiff and gritty. A worn seat washer and dried packing on the old stem cause all of it.

What is in the box

How to install it

Time: About 15 minutes. Tools: Deep stem socket or stem wrench, Screwdriver.

  1. Shut the water and open the valve to bleed pressure.
  2. Pop the index button, pull the handle and unscrew the bonnet nut.
  3. Back the old stem out with a deep stem socket or stem wrench. A crescent wrench will not reach a recessed valve and rounds the flats.
  4. Check the brass seat in the valve body while the stem is out. A scored seat keeps a new stem weeping.
  5. Thread the new stem in by hand until it seats, then snug the bonnet nut.
  6. Index the handle closed and restore water. Do not put teflon tape on the stem threads.

Questions

Does this include the brass seat?

No. It is the stem with the seat washer and packing installed. Danco 9B-3H includes a seat, so inspect yours while the stem is out.

Why is the hot stem right-hand thread?

The Sayco hot stem uses a right-hand bonnet thread while its handle sits in the left position. Order by position, not by thread direction.

Do you sell the cold and diverter stems?

Yes. FourHome sells the replacement for the Sayco P004 cold stem and the 06550 diverter stem, so a full valve rebuild is one order.
