Will it fit?

Fits

  • The center diverter position on Speakman three-handle tub and shower valves that take the G05-0408 stem

Not compatible with

  • The hot and cold positions on the same valve, which take shorter stems (sold separately)
  • Single-handle and two-handle valves
  • Pressure balance valves and cartridge faucets

Is this your part?

Pull the center handle and escutcheon and back the stem out with a deep socket. Measure it from the bonnet face to the tip. The diverter is 4-1/4 in. with a splined broach, noticeably longer than the hot and cold stems on the same valve. If yours is shorter, you pulled an outer handle.

When to replace it

Water keeps running out of the tub spout while the shower is on, the showerhead never comes up to full pressure, or the center handle spins loose and will not hold a position. A worn diverter stem or seat is the usual cause.

What is in the box

How to install it

Time: About 15 to 20 minutes. Tools: Deep socket sized to the bonnet, Adjustable wrench, Flashlight.

  1. Shut the water to the bath and open the spout to bleed pressure.
  2. Pull the center handle and escutcheon.
  3. Back the old stem out with a deep socket sized to the bonnet.
  4. Check the brass seat with a flashlight. A pitted or scored seat lets water past a new stem within months, so renew it if it needs it.
  5. Thread the new stem in by hand, then snug it with the socket.
  6. Refit the trim, restore water and check that the shower diverts fully.

Questions

Will it fit the hot or cold handle?

No. This is the center diverter stem only. The hot and cold positions on the same valve take shorter stems.

Is the seat included?

No. Reuse the seat if it is smooth, or replace it if it is pitted or scored.

Does FourHome sell other stems for Speakman valves?

Yes. FourHome also sells a 3-7/8 in. fine-spline stem and a 4 in. square-broach stem (replacement for Speakman G05-0407) for Speakman tub and shower valves. Measure your old hot and cold stems to see whether either one matches.
