Pull the handle and unthread the bonnet nut, then draw the cartridge out. The 1224 runs about 2-5/8 in. long with a 16-point broach, a washerless body and a white plastic stem, and 1224 or 1224B is stamped on the body. A stainless steel stem means the newer 1234 instead.
The spout drips with both handles closed, water weeps around a handle base, the cold side creeps warm, or a handle has gone stiff and gritty to turn. The cartridge and its O-rings wear out, not the faucet.
